Message from Executive Director Jean Lichty:

After careful consideration of our future agenda for our upcoming season, we at La Femme are creating initiatives that acutely fulfill our mission of exploring the universal female experience. For 2022, under the auspices of our first initiative, Women on the Verge: the Gladys and Mary Dohmen Reading Series, we will showcase three promising female artists on the verge of global recognition. And we are thrilled to inaugurate the program with the work of the following artists: the playwright Phanésia Pharel, the director Kyla Kantor, and the actress Carmen Berkeley. Phanésia will work on her play Black Girl Joy while Kyla and Carmen will work together on Megan Mostyn-Brown's Girl. Having recently worked with all three of these women on our virtual presentation of The Night of the Iguana, we are inspired by their talent and character.

Our second initiative for 2022, A Woman's Storyland will develop stories about the female experience. Under the auspices of this program, Phanésia will develop Black Girl Joy and then present it as part of the Women on the Verge reading series. Regina Taylor, the illustrious playwright, director, and actress, will not only help Phanésia hone the play in A Woman's Storyland workshop but will also direct it for the Women on the Verge reading series.

The Black Girl Joy workshop is currently scheduled to take place April 4 to April 15, 2022, with a public reading to follow on April 18, 2022. The public reading of Girl is scheduled for April 11, 2022.

Immensely honored to work with these eminently talented women, we at La Femme look forward to supporting and presenting their work. Calendar dates and news about La Femme's next Off-Broadway production for the 2022-2023 season will be posted soon.
