In Tennessee Williams’s The Night of the Iguana, a defrocked clergyman encounters inside disturbances amid outside disturbances during one stormy night at the Costa Verde Hotel in Acapulco as the world prepares for World War II. After four women of different ages and backgrounds, along with a 97-year-old poet, engage in the clergyman’s spiritual struggles, their lives leap dramatically forward. And the catalytic, defrocked clergyman survives the night.
“La Femme is dedicated to presenting classic plays with extraordinary casts and creative team, and we are thrilled to present The Night of the Iguana, helmed by the incomparable Emily Mann. As much as we will miss performing on an actual stage, our team has been flexible enough to pivot to present this iconic play online. During these trying times, we are proud to offer this presentation as a benefit for The Actors Fund.”
La Femme Executive Director, Jean Lichty
The creative team includes Beowulf Boritt (Set / Background Design), Darron L West (Music / Sound Effects), Amy Stoller (Dramaturg and Language Consultant), Stephanie Klapper (Casting Director), Cheryl Mintz (Production Stage Manager), and LDK Productions / Lisa Dozier King (General Management).

From December 2, 2020 to December 6, 2020, La Femme presented a pre-recorded reading of Tennessee Williams's The Night of the Iguana, directed by 2019 Theater Hall of Fame inductee Emily Mann, featuring Emmy nominee Dylan McDermott and another Theater Hall of Famer, Phylicia Rashad, and beautifully enhanced by the set design of Tony winner Beowulf Boritt, the sound design of Tony winner Darron L West, and the editing of Seth Walters.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with patrons maintaining that it was the first time that they understood the play in a "woman-centered and credible" rendering, and then asking when they could see it again.
Consequently, La Femme re-streamed the video from March 25 to March 28, 2021 on the Stellar Tickets platform. This encore presentation debuted March 25, the eve of Tennessee Williams's 110th birthday, and included "In Conversation," a roundtable discussion with Emily Mann, Phylicia Rashad, and Jean Lichty, to kick off the celebration.
Both virtual presentations raised over $30,000 for the indispensable The Actors Fund, a charity that continues to help artists survive the indignities of the pandemic. For your consideration and convenience, the press release, trailer, and "In Conversation" video are all below. Updates are forthcoming!
